About Souda Village

Souda is a small town near Chania city, about 7 km away. It was founded in 1870 on a former swamp area. The Port of Souda, which is the main port for Chania city, boosted the growth and development of the town. Many houses have been constructed between Souda and Chania city, making Souda seem like an extension of the city. Souda lies on the deepest part of the splendid Souda Bay, one of the longest and safest bays in the Mediterranean. This is why there are two important naval bases: One of the Greek Navy, and one of the NATO forces. Therefore, Souda town has a very strategic position.

On the other side of the bay, you can see the Allied War Cemetery of Chania, where the heroes from all over the world who fought against the German invasion of Crete during WWII are buried. Most people come to Souda by ferry or ship, on their way to Chania city or other places on the island. However, the town itself is quite nice and has some excellent taverns with traditional Cretan food, especially seafood. Souda town may not be as charming or distinctive as other more traditional villages in Crete, but its location, offering a stunning view of the amazing Souda bay, and its good facilities, make it stand out.
